Policies of Peer Review

 | Post date: 2026/07/15 |
The Journal of Sport Biomechanics is committed to conducting a fair, rigorous, transparent, and timely peer-review process. The journal employs a double-blind peer-review system to ensure that editorial decisions are based solely on the scientific quality, originality, methodological rigor, ethical integrity, and relevance of submitted manuscripts.
The journal's peer-review policy has been developed with reference to internationally recognized recommendations, including those of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

1. Double-Blind Peer Review
The Journal of Sport Biomechanics uses a double-blind peer-review system.
The identities of both authors and reviewers remain confidential throughout the review process. Authors should ensure that the manuscript submitted for peer review does not contain information that could reveal their identity.

2. Initial Editorial Assessment
All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial editorial assessment before entering the peer-review process.
During this stage, the Editorial Office evaluates whether the manuscript:
•    Falls within the aims and scope of the journal;
•    Complies with the journal's submission requirements;
•    Meets acceptable standards of scientific quality and reporting;
•    Includes all required ethical statements and supporting information;
•    Meets the journal's originality requirements.
Manuscripts that do not satisfy these requirements may be returned to the authors for technical revision or declined without external peer review.

3. External Peer Review
Manuscripts that successfully pass the initial editorial assessment are sent to at least two independent expert reviewers with appropriate expertise in the subject area.
Reviewers evaluate manuscripts according to criteria including:
•    Scientific originality
•    Methodological quality
•    Ethical compliance
•    Statistical appropriateness (where applicable)
•    Clarity of presentation
•    Interpretation of results
•    Relevance to the journal's aims and scope
Reviewers are expected to provide objective, constructive, and evidence-based comments to assist both the authors and the Editor-in-Chief.

4. Editorial Decision
Based on the reviewers' reports and the scientific merit of the manuscript, the Editor-in-Chief makes one of the following decisions:
•    Accept
•    Minor Revision
•    Major Revision
•    Reject
Where necessary, additional reviewers may be invited before a final editorial decision is made.
Reviewer recommendations are advisory in nature. The final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of a manuscript rests solely with the Editor-in-Chief, who considers the reviewers' comments together with the journal's editorial policies, scientific standards, and ethical requirements.

5. Revision Process
When revisions are requested, authors should submit:
•    A revised manuscript with all changes clearly indicated;
•    A detailed point-by-point response explaining how each reviewer comment has been addressed.
Where appropriate, revised manuscripts may be returned to the original reviewers for further evaluation.

6. Responsibilities of Reviewers
Reviewers are expected to:
•    Provide objective, fair, and constructive evaluations;
•    Maintain the confidentiality of all submitted manuscripts;
•    Declare any actual or potential conflicts of interest before accepting a review invitation;
•    Complete reviews within the requested timeframe;
•    Report any suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, data fabrication, image manipulation, or other ethical concerns to the Editorial Office.

7. Confidentiality
All manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Sport Biomechanics are treated as confidential documents.
Editors, reviewers, and Editorial Office staff must not disclose, distribute, or use unpublished information obtained during the peer-review process for personal, academic, professional, or financial benefit.

8. Conflict of Interest
Editors and reviewers should disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest that could influence, or reasonably be perceived to influence, their editorial judgment.
Individuals with significant conflicts of interest should decline participation in the review or editorial decision-making process.
Further information is available in the journal's Conflict of Interest Policy.

9. Publication Ethics
The Journal of Sport Biomechanics is committed to maintaining the integrity of the scholarly record.
Any concerns regarding plagiarism, duplicate publication, data fabrication, image manipulation, authorship disputes, or other forms of research misconduct are handled in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics policy.

10. Review Timeline
The Editorial Office makes every reasonable effort to ensure a timely, fair, and efficient peer-review process.
Although review times may vary depending on reviewer availability, manuscript complexity, and the number of revision rounds, authors will be informed promptly of editorial decisions throughout the review process.
The Editorial Office continuously monitors the peer-review process to ensure fairness, confidentiality, quality, and timely communication with both authors and reviewers.
