Extended Abstract
Editor in Chief, Journal of Sport Biomechanics
A letter to the editor or correspondence is considered one of the non-research articles; however, in Iran, not much attention has been paid to this type of manuscript style. The types of articles that researchers work on in various fields are written in different styles and formats. Scientific research articles are among the most popular articles worldwide, but it should be kept in mind that there are still gaps even in this type of article, which can provide a basis for further research in the field. A letter to the editor can be unique in its kind and help clarify an issue.
To write a letter to the editor, what is customary worldwide is that the reader notices a scientific error in an article after careful reading. In this situation, the reader writes a letter to the editor with full respect and adherence to ethical principles. Upon receiving and reviewing the letter, if the editor agrees with the reader's opinion, the editor of the respective journal will forward the letter to the author responsible for the study in question and request a scientific and respectful reply within a specified timeframe. At the discretion of the esteemed editor, both the letter and the response can be published in the subsequent issue. This underscores the significance that respected researchers attach to both research and non-research articles.
The observance of ethical principles is crucial because in this type of article (letter to the editor), the author may be held scientifically responsible or acknowledge an error in the incident.
Alternatively, authors can submit a letter concerning knowledge enhancement or the identification of existing gaps in the field. Unlike review articles, in this type of article (letter to the editor), it is not necessary to have prior articles in the field to identify these gaps, meaning sources do not necessarily have to be from the author themselves.
Regarding word count, different journals have varying policies, but the typical count is 500 words with 3-5 keywords, a maximum of 5 references, and a maximum of 6 authors (1, 2). To increase the likelihood of publishing such articles, it is suggested to follow these points:
1. Be concise while clearly expressing the topic.
2. Have an authoritative and reputable signatory.
3. Provide comprehensive content.
4. Maintain politeness and respect in criticisms and suggestions.
In conclusion, acquiring knowledge about writing these types of articles and adhering to ethical principles can pave the way for knowledge enhancement and progress in various fields.
