Objective Genu varum is a potential risk factor for the development and progression of knee osteoarthritis. This study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of kinesiotaping applied to the biceps femoris and vastus lateralis muscles on the external knee adduction moment and lower-limb joint power during walking in individuals with genu varum and healthy controls.
Methods Thirty male participants, including 15 individuals with genu varum and 15 healthy controls, were recruited. External knee adduction moments and lower-limb joint power were assessed during walking under two conditions: without taping and with kinesiotaping applied to the biceps femoris and vastus lateralis muscles.
Results Before taping, the genu varum group exhibited a significantly greater first peak of the external knee adduction moment than the control group (P = 0.029). Following kinesiotaping, this between-group difference was no longer statistically significant (P > 0.05). In the genu varum group, kinesiotaping was associated with significant increases in the magnitude of negative ankle joint power (P = 0.038), negative knee joint power (P = 0.025), and positive knee joint power (P = 0.012). Positive knee joint power also increased significantly in the control group (P = 0.017). No significant changes in hip joint power were observed (P > 0.05).
Conclusion Kinesiotaping of the biceps femoris and vastus lateralis muscles was associated with immediate changes in knee adduction moments and ankle and knee joint power during walking, particularly in individuals with genu varum. These findings suggest that kinesiotaping may influence lower-limb joint mechanics; however, its clinical benefits and potential effects on knee osteoarthritis risk remain uncertain and require further investigation.
