Objective This study investigated the effects of eight weeks of core stability training on Functional Movement Screen (FMS) scores, balance, lower-limb explosive power, and punch impact force in amateur boxers.
Methods In this quasi-experimental study, 24 amateur boxers with FMS scores ≤14 were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 12) and control (n = 12) groups. The experimental group completed eight weeks of core stability training (three sessions per week) alongside regular boxing training. FMS scores, static and dynamic balance, lower-limb explosive power, and punch impact force were assessed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA.
Results Significant group × time interactions were observed for the total FMS score and all seven items, static and upper- and lower-quarter dynamic balance, lower-limb explosive power, and punch impact force (P = 0.001). All variables improved significantly in the experimental group (P < 0.001), whereas no significant changes occurred in the control group (P > 0.05). Large effect sizes were observed across all variables (ηp² = 0.74–0.79).
Conclusion Eight weeks of core stability training significantly improved functional movement quality, static and dynamic balance, lower-limb explosive power, and punch impact force in amateur boxers. These findings support incorporating core stability training as a complementary component of boxing training programs. However, further research is needed to determine its effects on competitive performance and injury risk.
